The Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans has been a builder favourite since 2017. The design rewards effort. The tail blades, the asymmetric arm layout, the mace, the general presence of the thing. The Full Mechanics 1/100 is one of the more substantial kits in the IBO line, with a lot of internal frame detail that shows up in builds that go that extra distance. The HG 1/144 HGIBO is more accessible and still turns out well in the right hands. Six builders, different grades, different approaches to the same mech.

1. KASSY LAB / カッシーラボ — MG Advanced Customisation

KASSY LAB / カッシーラボ via YouTube went for the MG Barbatos Lupus (the base Lupus, not the Rex) with an advanced customisation guide in January 2026. The distinction matters. The Lupus form is cleaner in silhouette and the MG tooling gives you more to work with at the internal frame level. What the advanced customisation angle signals is that KASSY LAB isn't here for a straight build. Surface scribing, additional detail parts, a systematic approach to weathering, these are build-phase decisions that change the character of the kit entirely. Worth studying for the methodology. 2. ALLDay7 — Speed Build Wolf Model MG 1/100

ALLDay7 via YouTube posted an ASMR speed build of the Wolf Model MG 1/100 Barbatos Lupus Rex in February 2026. Note: Wolf Model is a third-party manufacturer. This isn't an official Bandai release. That's worth stating clearly, but it's also worth watching because speed builds of third-party kits show you what the engineering actually looks like in motion, which Bandai's marketing material does not. 3. Synes Garage — FM 1/100 ASMR Build

Synes Garage via YouTube built the Full Mechanics 1/100 in March 2025 using an ASMR build format. The FM 1/100 is the kit most people associate with the Lupus Rex at this scale, and it's a substantial piece of plastic. The internal frame alone takes time. What ASMR builds do well with a kit this complex is give you a continuous read on the build sequence: you can see when parts fit cleanly, when the builder slows down, where the kit demands attention. 4. @GunplaUniversity — FM 1/100 Painted Build

@GunplaUniversity via YouTube approached the Full Mechanics 1/100 as a painted build, which changes the question from assembly to finishing. Once you're painting, the internal frame becomes a separate problem from the outer armour, and the Lupus Rex's colour blocking, the dark body against the lighter accent pieces, needs to be thought through before primer goes on. 5. JL Gunpla UK — Resin Kit Custom Painting

JL Gunpla UK via YouTube went for a resin conversion kit from LabZero, not the Bandai plastic. Resin kits for the Lupus Rex exist because the official FM 1/100 form factor has specific limitations and the third-party garage kit market fills the gaps. LabZero's Lupus Rex is a different object to build: resin preparation, sanding, priming differently from styrene, a different cleanup process. 6. Studio G — HG 1/144 Custom Build

Studio G via YouTube built a custom HG 1/144 Barbatos Lupus Rex. Custom builds at HG scale mean modification: cut-and-repositioned parts, scratch-built detail additions, structural changes that wouldn't be possible on a straight build. It's a different skill set from painting and it's often where the most interesting work happens. The Lupus Rex remains one of the most visually distinctive designs from Iron-Blooded Orphans and it holds up across grades and approaches. The FM 1/100 is probably still the definitive plastic kit experience for the mech. The HG scale works for painted builds. Resin kits exist if you want to go further. All ten builders on this list approached the same design differently and each one demonstrates something the others don't. Mecha Gaikotsu and @GunplaUniversity are both worth following if you're studying finishing approaches. JL Gunpla UK is the one to watch for resin work.
